What a road this album has traveled! Fraught with technical hassles, ignorance, scorn, and lawsuits, it survived to finally be recognized as one of the most influential albums ever, and for that matter, one of the best.

Brian Eno’s comment about the record : « It only sold 30,000 copies, but everyone who bought it started a band » yep.

All eleven songs that originally appeared on the album represent a fully formed musical and lyrical vision individually and as a part of the whole. While all the available reissues and remasters have raised the level of the listening experience, even if you put on the murky sounding first issue you are in no way able to discern the time period when this album was made - in 1966 when the recording began, today, more than fifty years later or any time in-between. And all that for simply one reason - it is timeless.

🥁 Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger 🥁

NINETIES ROCK / GRUNGE

Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger captures the band clicking on all cylinders. The album sustains a level of focus, cohesion, and intensity that the band’s later, more varied albums lack.

There were other grunge bands emerging around the same time in Seattle, like Pearl Jam, and there were even notable ones before them, like Temple of the Dog but Badmotorfinger set the bar for the grunge scene by being the first full grunge album.

This album also cemented Soundgarden’s own unique style and introduced the band to the entire world. Originally released on October 8 in 1991, Badmotorfinger was marked by three singles, “Jesus Christ Pose,” “Outshined” and “Rusty Cage.” The album also went on to reach double platinum in the U.S. and platinum in Canada.

💄 Juniore - Magnifique 💄

FRENCH POP

French "girl band of sorts" Juniore’s second album Magnifique - their first to get a UK release – is a condensed, exploration of French pop history.

Debut album, last year’s "Ouh la la" set the band’s aural template, which they have coined "ye-ye noir" (playing on the classic French approximation of Sixties beat music and their darker take), magnificently, but this follow-up is a step-forward!

Here frontwoman Anna Jean’s girl-gang come close to perfecting a formula that sees post-punk rhythms infiltrate the classic vocal styles of Francoise Hardy and Frances Gal, the explorative pop orchestrations of Serge Gainsbourg and playful retro-futurism via surf-rock riffs and the power of French new wave acts like Electric Callas and Marquis De Sade.

Anna Jean has described the tunes as dark love songs, "about the irony of things, the paradox of feelings", and Magnifique certainly creates that philosophical air.

Released in late-1983, Head Over Heels is the Cocteau Twins’ second album. Coming not long after original bassist Will Heggie had departed the band, the chemistry between remaining members Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie was flourishing. By moving the band on from the starkness of their debut, they were now making the music that would help them define the decade ahead; her wordless, dreamlike vocals a powerfu...l instrument over his lush, textured guitars.

Although often overshadowed by the more popular ‘Treasure’, 'Head Over Heels' is the most influential album in the Cocteau Twins catalogue and one that continues to confound 35 years later. More hard-edged and loud than Treasure, Head Over Heels is also a marvel of production - the way the guitars stay submerged in the mix while the drums pound, those sudden key changes, small flourishes etched into eternity.

👥 La Contra Ola – Synth Wave & Post Punk From Spain 1980-86 👥

La Contra Ola is the fascinating 1st ever survey of Spanish electronic music during the post-punk and synth wave phenomenon which swept subterranean US and European scenes circa 1980-1986.

By their own admission, Spain was late to electronic music, mostly due the restrictive dictatorship of General Franco. But when Franco fxcked off in 1975, it was open season for sounds made with boxes and plugged-in guitars. You’...ll find many of the best examples from that period in this set, ranging from the funked EBM swerve of La Fura dels Baus and Diseño Corbusier thru to the orientalist pop jitters of Lavabos Iturriaga and warped disco brilliance of Oviforia Sci, along with loads of other names you’ve never heard before.

So yeh, as you can see and hear, there was a lot of quality gear coming from Spain during that fecund, pre- home computer period, which makes this set rather tasty as both a historical education and a class set of tunes.
