Description

Our family has lived on this farm for over 2 generations. “Kunahmul”, meaning “Love Nest” in Mayan, is the name George Price gave our farm years ago, and exactly how we feel about it too.

Our shared dream of growing organic vegetables and bringing variety to Belize was born out of a love for each other and a love for this land.

Why Grow Organically?

Here at KO Farms, we believe in simplicity, in variety and in observing how nature does things. We grow all our produce from non-GMO seeds without added chemicals (Serious! no fertilizers or pesticides!) because why change what nature made just right?

Organic vegetables are known to contain higher levels of vitamins and nutrients than conventionally grown vegetables (see studies below). They also taste brighter, sweeter and more robust with flavour because of the natural elements that build their terroir.

Taste the difference with our produce! See how adding variety and colour to your diet improves your health!

What are these strange looking vegetables? Why heirloom?

Much like our philosophy on growing, we consider heirloom vegetable varieties (yes, the original guys!) to be important in saving the regional ecosystem and in keeping history alive.

Many of the heirloom or indigenous varieties we have chosen to grow originate in the Yucatan. This means they were meant to grow here and they love it here! Not only does this help us with pest and disease control, as they are naturally acclimatized, but it also means the people of this great land sustained themselves on these beautiful plants once too! Eat Belize, BE Belize!

How will we remember what our ancestors ate if we no longer grow the wild tomatoes they domesticated (which after many iterations became the tomato as we know it now)? How can we celebrate our culture without growing the plants of our regional cuisine? You heard us right! Calaloo, Culantro here we come!

We find that sticking to simple recipes often bring out the best in our veggies. The key is FRESH ingredients and a good cast iron pan! You can find lots of great ones at FTC in Spanish Lookout. And don't worry, it will come in handy for SO many other dishes!

Here's how we roast our aubergine: 🍆 Slice in chunks 🍆 Salt with sea salt in a bowl (This takes out excess water that came sometimes make the texture slimy)... 🍆 Place eggplant on a dish towel to absorb excess moisture 🍆 Put in cast iron pan and drizzle with olive oil 🍆 Pop in the oven at 375F for 10-15 min (keep checking).

It sounds basic, but we truly believe in letting our aubergine speak for itself! You can also change things up by playing with spice rubs or squeeze a lil lemon juice when you pull it out.

Enjoy! 👩🏻‍🍳

It's Sunday, the day of rest, but the rest of the week doesn't need to oppose this practice. Sometimes, we find, focusing on the weekend, can lead to dread for the upcoming Monday, when in reality, they are all just days. Like light and shadow, we can't really have one without the other. 🌿 In the past few years, we have learned a lot about farming, building a small business, fostering community & being rootless, but this journey has also been a great catalyst for even bigge...r journeys within. We feel so lucky to have the chance to dig our own path, to unearth little nuggets in the sand. 🌿 So far, here's what we've found in our trowels: ✨ 🌺 Stay generous, to yourself and others 🌺 Move slowly, to feel the pulse of the earth 🌺 Forgive easily & let go of hot coals 🌺 Allow flowers to grow between the cracks 🌺 ✨
