CZMAI has been implementing a Marine Litter campaign as part of our 20th yeah anniversary calendar of events as well as in recognition of World Oceans Day 2018. The campaign was geared towards educating students at the primary and secondary level about the dangers of marine litter and how they can help reduce the litter in Belizean waters. Today is Worlds Oceans day and also marks the end of this campaign which was initiated in May along with our partners, OCEANA and the World Wildlife Fund. Here are some pictures from this mornings presentations. #Keepoceansblue #worldoceansday

June 5, World Environment Day 2018 is a day to promote action for the protection of our environment. As citizens of Belize, the diversity of our natural resources is priceless and it is a shared responsibility of all us to continue protected and preserve the earth.

This Year's World Environment Day theme is beating plastic pollution. Currently, CZMAI is expanding its efforts in the fight against plastic pollution with its National Marine Litter Campaign. Our ultimate goal is... to raise the awareness of the impacts of marine litter and how we can reduce its prominence.

Today we encourage you to do something to take care of the earth!

EARTH DAY 2018 🌏

As CZMAI joins in on celebrating 48 years of observance of our home, Earth; we reflect on some of the issues which are affecting Earth and even Belize.

The plastic problem: You see it, we all see it, it is worse than we thought. There are countless stories of coastal communities drowning in plastics and other forms of litter. Even more devastating, our coastal and marine ecosystems are suffering due to marine litter and plastics discharge into our oceans. Pl...astic is a problem, but most certainly there’s work being done to combat this problem. Recently, Belize took action by approving the phasing out of single- use plastic bags, Styrofoam and plastic food utensils in an effort to reduce marine pollution and to protect our natural environment.

The growing number of endangered species across the globe is alarming. This year, earth lost its last male northern white rhino and several other species have been marked extinct. In Belize, the rhetoric is no different and it is essential to note that humans play a vital role in the survival of our animal friends. Thus, in Belize, the efforts have grown considerably in the last decade and a lot has been done, but much more can be done. We must commend our environmental activists for what they have accomplished in trying to curb the effects of anthropogenic activities, but our national awareness journey has just begun.

Even though the discussion extends beyond marine litter and endangered species with issues surrounding other forms of pollution such as air pollution, Belize is fortunate to not be exposed to such problems. Nevertheless, we are all responsible to play our part in safeguarding the Earth. Islands such as Goff’s Caye, shown in this photo, is a nesting place to many organisms and we are all challenged to ensure that they live in a safe and protected environment. Join us as we celebrate Earth Day 2018 and become more active in safeguarding Earth.
