0
Description

For active airport of the same name in the Republic of the Congo, see Pointe Noire Airport. The Agostinho Neto Airport was an airport in Cape Verde located next to the town of Ponta do Sol on the northern tip of the island of Santo Antão. The airport was named after Agostinho Neto, an Angolan politician who lived on the island during his exile. The airport was first constructed in the 1960s and adopted its present name in the 1970s after Cape Verde gained its independence. Because of dangerous crosswinds and weather that is often below VFR requirements, the airport is closed since March 2007. The island of Santo Antão is now served by Cesária Évora Airport on São Vicente. Along with Brava, Santo Antão now is an island without its own airport. In 2010, there were plans for a new airport in a safer location around Ponte Sul, 7 kilometers from Porto Novo. These plans have not come to fruition as of 2014.Other feature named after Agostinho Neto in Cape VerdeAnother landmark named after him is Hospital Agostinho Neto in the Plateau of Praia which is the city center of the national capital
