Along with the prominent landmarks of the city as well as of the country, they are part of UNESCO World Heritage Site, they have been since June 2009.DescriptionThe pillory is located at one of two famous city squares of Cidade Velha next to the city's beach which was once the city's port and the Atlantic and is on the edge of Ribeira Grande de Santiago, overlaid with a road named Caminho de Ribeira Grande (de Santiago). North is the valley and surrounding it are a ravine with a small mountain to the east. North is the EN1-ST05 connecting the capital Praia and Cidade Velha at the junction of the roads to Salineiro and Porto Mosquito. Next to the route being Rua Calhau are several rows of flowers, mostly indigenous type. The square is made out of cobblestone along with its nearby street, the coastal Rua do Calhau. Small buildings dominate the south and a café named after the monument is in the southwest. Nearby restaurants to the south include Penedinho and Tereru di Kultura (Tereiro de Cultura). The pillory was first erected in 1520. The monument suffered damages during Sir Francis Drake's raid on the island in 1585. More than a century later in 1712 during the Cassard expedition, as to the buildings in the city, the pillory was completely damaged. Unknown it was ever rebuilt after the raid, the monument was abandoned after the colonial capital was moved to nearby Praia in the island's southeast in 1770. Its restoration to the pillory was not made until the mid-20th century.
