About Villa Munkholma

In 1797, Russian Tsar Paul I donated Siikakoski, a beautiful white water By the River Kymi, and salmon fishing rights to the Monastery of Valamo. Due to huge salmon catches, 1799 Valamo Monastery built up a branch monk monastery By the riverside of Siikakoski. In Monastery was living about 30 monks at that time. Later, Valamo Monastery sold their land to the Finnish state and the Monastery was demolished in 1901. It was replaced 1903 By the present villa, privatly owned villa. In the middle of Siikakoski island located Virgin Mary Chapel is still standing on island Munkkisaari, Monk Island. In 90's, Martti and Aila Jussi-Pekka made an incredible work in renowating and restorating that old villa and they opened cafe-restaurant Munkkisaaren Maja. During the past couple of years, has Munkkisaaren Maja's doors been open only on special cases. In 2018, building will be opened again with the old-new name Villa Munkholma with daily open cafe-restaurant and possibly accommondation services.
