The Sawa-i-Lau Caves are located on the uninhabitted Sawa -I- Lau Island which is made out of limestone . The island is located on the edge of the Southern part of the Yasawa Island group. You can get to the island by boat or by seaplane.

If you have time or you on a budget then we recommend going to any of the nearest Island Resorts, as they all have Sawa- I - Lau cave visit available as an activity at their resorts. If you are in Fiji for a limited time or do not enjoy goi...ng by sea, then we recommend you take a seaplane ride to get to us.

When you get to the island, you will walk to the caves up a safe walkway and through the entrance which has a platform, from the platform to get inside the caves you will have to swim.

There are 3 caves located on Sawa- i-Lau, each with its own myths and legend. All of the 3 caves are beautiful to explore, it is highly recommended that you come prepared for snorkeling. To enter the first cave, you have to dive under the water and swim through a tunnel in order to enter it. Snockerling in the cave is an experience on its own, as the water is crystal blue and you will be able to see where you’re going and the beauty of the caves below sea level. In the first cave you will see two different chambers that you can go through. In the first chamber you will notice its high ceeling, where there is an opening, where light shines through the ceiling. On bright Sunny days, the light, gives a majestic and earthly feeling to the cave that adds to the caves beauty. In the second chamber you will see the cave has low ceiling that makes it a intimate setting that many enjoy. The second cave, known to the locals as “Qara ni Bukete”(Gahrah knee Booketar) translated as Pregnancy Cave, with the legend that in the olden days if someone was lying about their pregancy, they were taken to the cave to find out for sure. Legend has it if the girl was pregnant she would not be able to go through the entrance, as it would be too small for her no matter her size, whereas if she wasnt she would easily enter the cave. The third cave is locally known as “Qara ni Kasivi” (Gahrah knee Carsyvie) translated as called the Spitting Cave. In the third cave, the sound of a spit landing on the water is like to a exploding bomb whereas if you throw a stone, it will barely make a rippled sound.

Exploring the Sawa - I - Lau Cave is a must do if you ever in Fiji as it is a sight and experience like no other.
