Unique pearl mabe pieces from Tin Can Island - the Niuas in Tonga .......

Tin Can Island is a term of endearment for the rocky outcrop of islands known as the Niuas - Niua Fo'ou and Niua Toputapu. One of the Kingdom of Tonga's northern most outposts, closer in proximity to Samoa, Niua's rugged coastline prevents sea going vessels from berthing alongside its coastline.

Earlier last century mail and provisions were dropped in large tin cans into the sea and the youth of Niua p...addled out in canoes or swam out to retrieve the cans and provisions, hence the names Tin Can Island.

The fisherfolk are now including pearl farming as their livelihood and this batch of uniquely beautiful carved and handmade made pieces were made by the fisherfolk themselves and just one set of everything was sent to try out the market in Fiji.

this Sunday at Carnarvon Street Suva and see and taste the world - food from France, Philippines, Thailand,the UK,China, India, Flagstaff, Nabua, Tamavua and all parts of Suva! Judy's Jewels, Andreas and Dawn's carved jewelry, Linda's babywear, Angie's puris and curries, Margie Caine's world famous purini, cakes and jams and also see recycled paper (old magasines from Beverly Giblin and Connie Chew thank you very much) made into jewelry and beautiful baskets for the table or holding jewelry - at my stall in the heart of the ROC! Also 1 more masi/shell mirror left as seen below - just sold the larger one when we posted this message - FB too good again man!
