Description

The object of the Mission is to support visiting seafarers of all nationalities, as well as seafarers residing in the Falkland Islands.

The doors are open to all fishermen, British Antarctic Survey crews, yachtsmen, Royal Navy crews and retired seafarers.

The Mission particularly aims at assisting those who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress as a result of local, national or international disaster or by reason of their social and economic circumstances.

The main building is equipped with a wide range of facilities, which includes a relaxing lounge with a TV, laundry and shower facilities, computers, telephones and games equipment.

It also has a multi-faith prayer room affording quiet reflection space for those who want it.

A Portakin on the site has been converted into hostel accommodation for use by seafarers who are in transit.

As well as communications and recreational facilities, the centre holds a supply of second-hand clothing and other essentials.

The Port Chaplain, centre staff and volunteers offer welfare and counselling and try to promote the Christian ethos, and seek to make the Mission a home from home for those so far away from their own homes.

Outreach work includes visits to vessels, as well as visiting seafarers in hospital or recuperating from medical treatment in hotels and hostels in Stanley.

Both the Port Chaplain and the Chair of Trustees sit on the Port Welfare Committee, which seeks to work with the Falkland Islands Government to improve living and working conditions for fishermen and ships’ crews.

The two main challenges for the Mission through the years has been essential funding and the recruitment of a sufficient number of competent staff to run the centre.

With very grateful thanks to the Falkland Islands Government which gives an annual subvention, local fishing companies and individuals, and support from seafarers’ charities in the UK, the financial situation has eased somewhat in recent years.

However, income is still insufficient to allow the employment of staff at more than a minimum wage.

Without the willing support of volunteers it would not be possible to keep the centre open for the long evening and weekend hours required.

If anyone is interested in giving up some of their time to assist the Mission, or would like to donate items, then please contact Port Missioner Maurice LAKE.
