" So, it is not often that we would be prompted to write a review on a hotel unless it was a good review. At the time of booking we feel we were mislead/given incorrect information on their "dog policy" & the surcharge on this £250 a night hotel. Here is an accurate review of what we encountered on arrival & feelings on our stay. We were told our dog was allowed in the lounge & bar by Rothay Garden at time of booking. On our arrival( in peak season) we were told otherwise leaving us no choice in peak season but to stay or be stranded in Cumbria. This hotel was unapologetic, disinterested & we treated with distain. What should have been a birthday celebration resulted in a birthday day ruined by this Hotel's rude receptionist/manager whom took things to a whole new level of a "faulty towers service" with their less than acceptable behaviour. We feel this hotel (with the exception of the younger staff) was unfriendly, unwelcoming & is not what one would expect from a 4 star Hotel. We tried to pass a message onto the owner through the staff member concerned & nearly checked out the day we arrived. No surprise the staff member being complained about was adamant that she could not contact her manager/owner. We spoke with the owner by phone when we arrived home- which was a total joke/waste of time as the impression he gave in no uncertain terms is he really didn't care at all. Why would they? They had our money. More on that later....The room itself was excellent however the noise through the walls and floor prevented any form of sleep on the first night, in fact it was so bad we could hear someone snoring through the wall & their dog barking. Secondly & importantly it was claimed upon speaking with them AT LENGTH BEFORE BOOKING that they are "dog friendly". This utterly false & deceptive unless dog friendly means owners and dog cannot leave their room, have to rush through the lobby area (the only way to exit the hotel ) & will be made to feel like you have a contagious disease if you spent more that 2 seconds on view with a dog. Forget about sitting in the lounge area or the bar, basically we could not sit anywhere, AGAIN contrary to what was said at the time of booking.They get around this misleading dog policy by not advertising as dog friendly (small print) however state otherwise when you call to book - hence other dogs being there on our stay....VERY SNEEKY obviously they must need the bookings! Upon finally speaking with the owner he was rude & unapologetic; "has repeat business & referrals" , "saw no issue" & "that they had to be careful when people were booking about laying down the law re dog policy too heavily" Make of that what you will. We feel he implied that if he was transparent about the dog policy then dog owners would not book....hence Rothay Garden would lose bookings. He is right! If ALL the information at the time of booking was given to us we would NOT have booked to receive only half the services while being charged full price! (perspective the dog we took weights in at 6lbs) Ironically in the days we were there some locals in the village had nothing nothing positive to say about the hotel or owner this speaks volumes. We found a great place down the road where we could sit inside. Rothay Garden did not care at all about ruining my birthday, no apology, far from it & their rudeness was shocking. So read ALL the reviews & do not make the mistake we did reading just the 4/5 star reviews. We will never stay here again, it was worse place we have ever stayed at. What a shame, the place has great potential, is tired, overpriced & shabby. It is in a beautiful location, however there are many places that are amazing in the village with super friendly locals. "Spa" is a jacuzzi/hydro pool sauna & aroma room. We did not experience the same treatment as we witnessed other "older" guests did Rothay Garden for us = inequality, half services & rude, arrogant unapologetic & disgusting senior staff/owner attitude. Sadly the experience we had as dog owners, is echoed in other reviews we have since read. "
