The Inatsisartut, also known as the Parliament of Greenland in English, is the unicameral parliament of Greenland, the autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Established in 1979, it meets in Inatsisartut, on the islet of Nuuk Center in central Nuuk.There are 31 members. They are elected for four-year periods.History of the parliamentThe Parliament of Greenland succeeded the provincial council (Grønlands Landsråd) on 1 May 1979. The parliament is led by a presidency comprising four members of the parliament, and the chairman. There are 31 members in the assembly.SpeakerThe speaker is the presiding officer of the Inatsisartut. The speaker determines which members may speak, and is responsible for maintaining order. The current speaker is Lars Emil Johansen, former leader of the Forward Party. The speaker is nominated by the prime minister immediately following a general election and is confirmed by members; the speaker appoints four deputies.Recent resultsAfter the election, the social-democratic Siumut decided to form a coalition government with two center-right parties, the Democrats and Atassut. On 27 October, 2016, Siumut pursued a different coalition government formation with both the Inuit Ataqatigiit and Partii Naleraq, leaving its two former coalition parties in the opposition. In terms of numbers, this is the largest coalition in the recent history of the Greenlandic parliament.
