Description

Preface-------
When the taps collide with the floor, sound comes along with the dynamic vibration of the air particles. This simple and common physical phenomenon is one of the basic elements of tap dance. Art is the distillation of elements. Human makes good use of and extract the essence of the natural elements with our own creativity and it then becomes another form of human communication: Performing Arts. Tap dance, same as music, focuses on the tempo and the sound and could not only be heard but also be seen. It is because tap dance is the kind of dance and performing art based upon the sound.

If dancer’s legs are the drum sticks when wearing tap shoes, then the floor would be a big drum. Striking the surface of different textures creates different sounds and in the process of which dancers create different tempos. During the performance the body movements of the dancers blend with the sound they are producing and in general that is what tap dance is.

It is the 24th year of development of tap dance in Hong Kong that the general public has acknowledged and accepted this dance form. To trace back, tap dance has rooted in Hong Kong since 1990, the year when the School of Dance of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts established Musical Theatre Department to provide a professional dance programme which lasts for five years. With the school training, local professional tap dancers have thus taken to the stage. It proves not only the potential development of tap dance in Hong Kong but also the need of sustainable promotional planning in developing this particular dance form.

We intend to “create high quality productions assisted with active promotions” so as to build a loyal audience base and a long-term relationship with tap dance enthusiasts. In the future, we aspire to create more productions and to promote tap dance continuously, breaking the misunderstanding of that “it is a kind of art which is only for a small group of people”. We expect with more participation, we can let a little spark set the prairie ablaze.
