About Centre d'Agriculture Saint Barnabas

St. Barnabas Agricultural College (CASB), which attracts students from all over Haiti, has an exciting vision that is replicable in other developing countries. Currently, the 30-year-old Haitian junior college is a center for agriculture education and its practical application within Haiti's Northern Region. CASB's vision is to be a critical element of change within the region through agriculture education, technology application, and agribusiness economic development for the continued improvement and sustainability of the center, its students, regional farmers, and agriculture entrepreneurs – both large and small. In short, it is a vision of comprehensive economic development. With 350 fertile acres, the school will have irrigated orchards and crops, aquaponics, goats, cows, chickens, bees, community gardens for the new village across the street, a community center, and facilities for a residential learning community of 150 students. Once the breadbasket of Haiti, the Northern Region is ideal for this kind of development, and CASB is helping the area reclaim its historical role. Students and neighbors will grow their own food to enrich their own diet and to sell the surplus in the local markets. Partnerships with the local chapters of Food For The Poor, Heifer International, and the agronomy department of the Episcopal University in Port-au-Prince, among others, ensure an ongoing integrated approach to successful agribusiness.
