Description

SIP (Seni Indah Prima) School of Balinese Dance was founded in 2003, just a year after SIP Kindergarten School was started by Nyoman Sarjana, one-time head of Lembaga Pemberdayaan Masyarakat (Community Empowerment Institution), Legian. Initially the classes were run by Komang Putri Asih until she started a family of her own. Now the classes are run by two of her former students: Ocha and Dek Srik both extremely talented and graceful dancers in their own right. Komang Putri still teaches at the SIP Kindergarten School every week.

The Dance School classes take place every Sunday morning at the SIP School Education Centre on Jalan Sri Rama and, while most of the participants are young girls (some as young as 3 years old), participants also include adults both from Bali and occasionally from overseas.

Performances: To give the children an opportunity of performing in front of an audience, the School puts on weekly performances in Nyoman's family compound in Jalan Padma Timur, No. 3, Legian Kelod on a Wednesday evening. Dancing is to live music performed on Nyoman's own gamelan instruments by the SIP gamelan musicians, all young lads who clearly enjoy playing this traditional form of evocative music.

Often on these occasions a full meal is also provided to those who come to watch. There is no official charge for the entertainment or meal but guests are encouraged to make a discretionary donation which helps to buy costumes and other necessary materials for the Dance School.

The skill of the young dancers is fascinating to watch and a must for anyone interested in the culture of Bali.
