" The first name of the Tugu Square was JP Coen Plein as a tribute to Governor-General Jaan Pieterzoen Coen (also known as the founder of Batavia). Even the names of the streets around the square of this monument is also given the name of the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies who once ruled before.

The development objective of the JP Coen Plein park is complementary to the Dutch East Indies governor's yard. This park when first built is still very simple, there is no monument, railing fence, fountain and so on.

The construction of the monument in the middle of JP Coen Park started on August 17, 1946, a year after Indonesia's independence. The first stone was placed on the spot and signed by Soekarno and A.G. Suroto.

When the monument construction of Tugu has reached 95 percent, the Dutch had destroyed it in Military Aggression I in 1947. The Dutch destroyed this monument only to express its frustration against the persistent arek-arek Malang in maintaining Malang as the aggression took place.

Tugu Monument collapsed was rebuilt in 1953 by the Government of Malang City. Then this monument monument inaugurated by President Ir. Soekarno.

Monument located in the middle of the square became the fifth symbol for the five directions, where the main direction to City Hall Building is flanked by two roads namely Jalan Mojopahit and Jalan Gajahmada. While the rest towards the other roads are Jalan Kahuripan, Jalan Suropati and Jalan Kertanegara.

The peak of the monument shaped bamboo sharp monument became the symbol of bamboo spears as a weapon used by the people of Indonesia in expelling the invaders. The chain becomes the symbol of unity and unity of the Indonesian people that can not be divorced by the colonialists.

Bintang which has 17 foundations and 8 levels and also 4 and 5 angle staircase became the symbol of the independence day of Indonesia that is August 17, 1945. The red and white lotus in the pond around Tugu become brave and sacred symbol, like the Indonesian flag. "

" Located just right in front of the Mayor City Office, this park looks so beautiful at night with the colorful flowers and the view of Tugu Hotel. Children will love running and playing on the grass and seeing the pool with the lotus flowers. Very nice spot to take pictures as a proof that you do visit Malang City 😊 "

" A park in the middle there is a 'Tugu' surrounded by a lotus pond.. As you walk through this park you can see and smell the beautiful flowers(real flowers) and this park also has plastic flowers.. There are chairs set up and scattered all around the park for people to sit.. By the way, it started raining so i'm only here for a while.. "

" One of best icons of Malang. Beautiful in the morning with lotus blooming. Great in the evening with the sunset in the western sky. Exotic in the night with the lamps. Yet, it will be hot if we stay there at noon. "

" It is a monument in front of Balai kota.
It has a garden and a track around it.
Well kept with many workers doing maintenance job.
Around this round-about the traffic is heavy.
Lots of lotus with beautiful flowers in the pond surrounding the monument.
This place is enhanced by fountains.
Places near to this monument include: Malang Train Station, Masjid A Yani, Taman Rekreasi, Pasar Burung, Pasar Bunga & Brawijaya Edupark. "
