Description

1. Natural Laboratory of Peat Swamp Forest (NLPSF) UNPAR at Kereng Bangkirai-Sabangau.

Until 1996 forest area west from Sabangau river was managed by forest company PT. Setia Alam Jaya. After taht the area was still exploited by illegal logging including drainage caused by canals fot timber extration. In 199, the Local Goverment of Central Kalimantan and Universty of Palangka Raya (UNPAR) established collaborative research with BPPT Jakarta and the University of Nottingham UK for (1) establisment Natural Laboratory of Peat Swam Forest (NLPSF) as research centre on ecology and natural resource functions of tropical peat swamp forest, and (2) for planning International Peat Symposium 1995.
Establisment of Natural Laboratory was very important, cause previously there had not been place for focused research on biodiversty and promotion of peat swamp forest sustainabillity and wise use.

2. Kalampangan Zone

Kalampangan Zone is part of Mega Rice Project (MRP) drained for agriculture. This caused change in peat hydrogical status, that was followed by repeated fires, vegetation degradation, subsidence and high carbon emissions from peat. This area is located between the Kalampangan Zone and Garong canals in Block C the ex MRP, that link the Kahayan and Sabangau rivers.
In this area CIMTROP UNPAR and Hokkaido University established two towers for research during JSPS project (1997 to 2006), a base camp and permanent plots by several research group. Helsinki Universty started hydrology restoration by building dams on 2004. Since 2005, this activity has been supported by EU RESTROPEAT project aiming at peatland damage restoration . For community development, CIMTROP established community based fire management (CBFiM) called Tim Serbu Api (TSA) KALTENG for securing the area including 18.000 ha primary forest. Concept for a new restoration system called Buying Living Tree System (BLTS) was first carried out in the area in 2004. Pilot project BLTS was implemented by CIMTROP through Siemenpuu Foundation with Finnish Goverment funding.
