About Conservation International - Africa Field Division

People need nature in order to thrive, and nowhere is that more evident than in Africa. We know that human beings are totally dependent on nature — and that by saving nature, we're saving ourselves. To that end, CI is helping to build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet. We do this through science, policy, and partnerships with countries, communities and companies. CI was founded in 1987, and has been operating in Africa since 1990. We seek to break the cycle of the erosion of Africa's natural capital and its people's well-being, by contributing to a new development paradigm where growth embraces, not erodes, nature, and where nature is valued, protected and managed for the benefit of human well-being. This is done through: - Identifying, Protecting and Sustaining Africa's key natural capital; - Supporting Sustainable Production of food and energy; and - Promoting effective governance and investment by integrating nature into country development plans and international commitments. We employ nearly 1000 people and work with more than 500 partners in 17 countries, helping protect over 570,000 square kilometers (220,000 square miles) of Africa's critical ecosystems (both terrestrial and marine). We are engaging African leaders, empowering local communities and helping to evaluate the true value of the continent's natural resources.
