Renting in the Muthaiga and greater Kitisuru area

So here is a little about rentals in one of the most exclusive areas in the city. The Muthaiga and greater Kitisuru area stretches out from Thika road and wraps its way up all the way to Peponi road.
If you’re looking for the best places to live in Nairobi, then look no further. Wherever you’re from, whatever your interests are, the Muthaiga and greater Kitisuru area has it covered.
It is home to all sorts of real estate ranging from English cottages and colonial houses, to gorgeous villas, eclectic rustic houses and Mediterranean homes. The area is very popular for its greenery, lush gardens and well networked associations. As majority of the properties in this area are owner occupied the standards in security and maintenance tend to be very high. The proximity to the UN, embassies, great schools and malls are the reason why the prices are as they are but, most of you will agree with me that once you have lived here you just cannot imagine living anywhere else.
Rentals in this area have no set price point as every house has its own personality and charm. You could live on the same street and have a difference of up to $3000 in rent to your neighbour next door. It is all about the street, size of the land and how new the property is. Everything works out as some kind of compromise.
In this issue we have four amazing rentals to showcase in Nyari, Muthaiga, Spring valley and Kitisuru.
Nyari is a fairly new leafy upmarket suburb that’s off Redhill road and borders Kitisuru and New Muthaiga. It has a brilliant association and is known for its superb security; it’s one area you are not going to randomly get into. Most houses are on an acre or more. It is a ten to fifteen-minute drive to some of the best schools the country has to offer, a number of embassies, the UN complex and it is still within close proximity to swanky Westlands.
Muthaiga, surprisingly, was the first dairy farm to supply all of Nairobi with milk; who would have known. Muthaiga estate dates back to 1901 that is probably why there are so many colonial style houses. Its reputation goes back for centuries and up to date it is still one of the most exclusive if not the most exclusive neighbourhood in the country. Muthaiga is home to the Muthaiga golf club, Getrude’s children’s hospital and a number of embassies including the American embassy. It’s a short drive to Thika road, the UN, various malls and the Karura forest.
Kitisuru is named after the Getathuru river and stretches up from Redhill road all the way up to Peponi road. Unlike areas like Muthaiga, this is where you are most likely to get several gated communities on the same street with communities having 5 to 10 houses all in the same compound. This area is ideal for those that are happy with a small of garden and a neighbour close by. Kitisuru has an amazing mix of properties as it is fairly new, with something for everybody.
Spring Valley is probably one of the best placed, location wise. This is because it is a five-minute drive to westlands and a ten-minute drive to the UN on the opposite direction. Most of the houses in Spring Valley are colonial or English cottage style with modern interiors, and it has a very active resident’s association. It is that estate with nannies pushing prams on the spring valley road and kids riding bicycles.
These areas as well as Thigiri or new Muthaiga make up the Muthaiga and the greater Kitisuru area. Regardless of where you choose to rent, the important thing to remember is that there is no set rule on rent as every house is different in terms of size, feel, age and history. Sometimes it is all about lady luck. You could rent a brilliant property at a fraction of the market price or an overpriced one because you love having Karura as your back drop. All in all, I am yet to find one person that is not happy living in this area.
