m-KAZI is a mobile recruitment tool that efficiently connects jobseekers and employers in Africa. It allows jobseekers to create a mini CV on basic mobile phones and receive SMS job alerts. Employers can in turn target candidates on the m-KAZI database who meet their requirements. While the majority of Kenyans lack consistent access to the internet, over 75% of the population own a mobile phone. While job websites like Monster.com have become synonmous with job search, such websites offer only white collar higher-skilled work. This is also the case for job websites in Africa. The fact remains that the unemployment rate is at a staggering 40% and the majority of these are blue collar and semi-skilled workers. There does not exist a centralized platform where the semi-skilled labour force can access job information. Job search is a 20 billion dollar industry globally but in its early stages in Africa with unrivalled potential for growth. There is a billion dollar industry in blue collar job search that remains untapped in Africa.
