The Kiribati Development Plan and the Paris Agreement both highlight the importance of increasing access to climate finance for the implementation of projects and programmes to address the impacts of climate change in Kiribati. The Government of Kiribati (GoK) is committed to securing the necessary resources from climate thematic funds to implement climate adaptation and mitigation projects and programmes.The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MFED) serves as the National Designated Authority (NDA) to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Focal Point to the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the Designated Authority to the Adaptation Fund (AF), and more recently the Operational Focal Point for the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).Given the complexity and the volume of work required to access these funds, and the need to coordinate and institutionalise climate financing within the Government, Cabinet approved in November 2016 the establishment of KCFD as a dedicated Division within MFED to support and increase engagement with all climate funds, including bilateral, regional and multilateral funds.
