Mekong River Cruises, a Lao-German joint venture, launched the first long-distance river cruise of all times on the upper Mekong in 2005. On the "mother of all waters" the ships sail on different routes between Chiang Saen in Thailand in the heart of the Golden Triangle, the royal city of Luang Prabang, the Laotian capital Vientiane.
