Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. According to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Sinharaja is the country's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and many of them are considered rare.
The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests Eco region, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve's name translates as Lion Kingdom.

Motherly love and care is extended in equal measure to the offspring by humans and animals alike as exemplified by this she-elephant who blocked oncoming vehicles to allow her baby elephants to cross the road at Kotigala in the Yala National Park the other day. Foreign tourists who were among those present enjoyed the spectacle, notwithstanding the 30 minute delay they encountered.

#Medirigiriya is located little out of the way from Polonnaruwa (not too far away!) However, the stupa at Medirigiriya is unique and one of the best conserved.
Travel Tip : Since it is a religious place of worship you will have to remove your shoes within certain areas. It can be really hot in Polnnaruwa, so sunglasses, a cap, and a bottle of water would come in handy!
A quick glimpse into the sacred city of #Polonnaruwa.
'Lankathilaka' is a monolithic image of the Buddha and a house made to shelter the image which was built by king Parakramabahu (1153-1186).
This mammoth building is made completely out of brick, with its outer walls covered with elaborate designs and carvings.

The Buddha statue is also completely made out of clay bricks and was an imposing 41 feet in height prior to the area aboue its shoulders being destroyed.
Two massive pillars make up the the entrance to the #Lankathilaka building and the tallest is 58 feet in height, however it is estimated that these pillars would have been at least twice as tall this before destruction. Some manuscripts state that this building was five stories tall.

These unique guardian stones have been protecting the Polonnaruwa temple built to store the tooth relic of Lord Buddha for centuries.
The structure, known as the 'Polonnaruwa Vatadage' it is believed to have been built by Parakramabahu I during his reign in the 12th century
