The Cultural Section of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka a.k.a. Russian Centre in Colombo is a representative of the Federal Agency for Commonwealth of Independent States, compatriots living abroad and International humanitarian cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo) in Sri Lanka. A large number of classes are conducted at the Russian Centre such as Classical Ballet, Chess, Music, Art, Drama & Theatre and Russian Language which are very popular among children who find the atmosphere of the Russian Centre very attractive.

The Russian Cultural Centre has a library where you can find books in Russian, English, Sinhala and Tamil languages. Lovers of the Russian classic literature will find here the immortal creations by renowned Russian writers such as Maxim Gorki, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and many more.

The Russian School of Music helps young Sri Lankans to open the magic world of music. It conducts classes and promotes musical talents helping them to blossom as young performers. The classes are mainly in Piano, Violin, Vocal and Guitar. The students are put on stage on many occasions for concerts and sent for internationally recognized examinations.


The Ballet classes are given for students who are 3 years upwards. The Russian School of ballet promotes classical ballet by conducting ongoing classes, workshops and also staging ballet performances. The classical Language of ballet is spoken at the fine concerts organized at the Centre. Annual examinations are conducted by the ballet artists from Moscow.

The Chess club by the name of Anatoly Karpov is headed by the well-known Sri Lankan chess player, 10 times Sri Lanka and the World Champion, One and only FIDE instructor in Sri Lanka Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya. Children of all age groups are the members of the Club. Chess tournaments, coaching camps, master classes with the participation of internationally renowned grand masters are held on regular basis.

The Russian Centre in Colombo also conducts Holiday Camps for children in July, August & December.

Promotion of Russian Higher Education is a very important part of work of the Russian Centre. Everyone who wants to study in the Russian Universities which are renowned to be among the best in the world are welcomed in the Russian Centre to get the full information about the necessary documents and procedures.
