Negombo

Negombo is mainly a fishing town, and also a popular beach resort with long, wide beach strips. The fishermen use traditional methods and old world craft like outrigger canoes and catamarans. This is a great place to sample seafood. Lagoon crabs and prawns are a specialty. A few pleasant bars and restaurants along the beach and the hotel strip contribute to the nightlife.

The numerous Christian churches dotted around, bring out the colonial flavor that still lingers in Negombo. The Portuguese, Dutch and British used it as main export harbor for cinnamon in the old days. Of the old Dutch Fort, only the ruins of the eastern gate and a clock tower remain. Taking a bicycle ride along one of the roads that border the Dutch canal is a nice way to see local village life.
An early morning or late afternoon boat trip is the ideal way to spot the flora and fauna of the Muturajawela wetland sanctuary nearby. Numerous water birds, butterflies, monitor lizards and even some crocodiles inhabit this eco-system.

Lellama Visit

Make an early start to Lellama, the large open air fish market and auction of Negombo, as fishing boats bring in their catch at dawn.
Watch the bounty of shark, barracuda, tuna, stingray, crab, jumbo prawn, squid and clam being unloaded on the beach. Catch the aggressive bidding and harsh toned haggling that leads to many a bargain, above the noisy crows and gangs of dogs fighting for scraps. Feel the salty breezes mixed with fishy odours. Experience the raw intensity of the action.

Perhaps you might like to pick up your favourite sea food, to be cooked and enjoyed later in the day at Dil’s Sri Lankan kitchen.
