About St. Xavier's Boys' College

The Good Shepherd School in Mannar owes its origins to St. Francis Xavier, who sent his missionary priests to Sri Lanka to spread the faith. In 1542, these missionaries arrived in Mannar and established a school to educate children in their native language while instilling faith in them.In 1845, when Jaffna became one of the first two dioceses of Ceylon, Catholic education gained significant importance under the guidance of Bishop Bonjean OMI, who was known as the Champion of Catholic Education in Sri Lanka. Many schools were founded during this time, including the Good Shepherd School in Mannar. In 1870, under the guidance of Bishop Bonjean OMI, Rev. Fr. Peter Maria Boutin OMI, a model religious and exemplary French missionary, came to Mannar to provide a sound English education alongside the vernacular language. The school he founded was named the Good Shepherd School. The missionaries recognized the importance of education in the development of the Church in Sri Lanka, particularly in a growing town like Mannar. As a result, they appointed a dedicated missionary to promote education in the area through the newly established school. In 1894, the Brothers of St. Joseph took over the administration of the school, headed by Brother Felix, and continued to run it through ups and downs until 1907. In 1911, the OMI priests relocated the school to its present location near the Parish House of St. Mary's Church, renaming it St. Xavier's School. We express our gratitude to the almighty God for His continuous guidance and the numerous blessings bestowed upon our beloved college. We always seek the intercession of St. Francis Xavier and the guidance of St. John Baptist De La Salle.
