" Beautiful temple easily accessible from Ella with bajaj driving along the tea plantations.

Small entrance fee to enter the temple (containing wall paintings and two reclining Buddha's), however the large buddha statue is carved into the rock outside the temple to the left. "

" An ancient temple that still got it’s vibrance. Has both cultural and spiritual value, if sensitive, this is an amazing place for meditation. Buy a box of flowers and incense sticks from outside to create the right ambiance.
-
It makes clear that ancient Hinduism and Buddhism goes hand in hand "

" Stunning little temple. We had a chat with a young monk at the entrance of the temple. He told us a bit of the history of the place. The temple is about 2000 years old!!! You can make a little donation and then go inside the temple to see the painted walls and ceilings. You can also see the reclining Buddha in the praying room . "

" Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya lies few kilometres away from the Bandarawela town on the Bandarawela – Badulla Road. This temple is thought to be done by King Walagamba in the in first century BC. This is one of the many temples built by the king while taking refuge in the Uva province after an Indian invasion.
The temple has gain popularity mainly due to its massive 38 feet Buddha Statue carved in the granite rock. But this temple also hides some secrets that time has forgotten.
The uncompleted image of the Buddha is carved out of a granite boulder which is well hidden form the main road. No much of attention has been given to this statue and it seems to be slowly breaking up. At the top pf the boulder is a small stupa. This stupa is the on the same level as the road and it is the only indication of a temple to a traveler on the road. "

" Ancient rock temple of Dowa was built by King Walagamba (103 - 77 BC). This is amust stop for anyone travelling in the Badulla - Bandarawela highway. There is an unfinished stone statue of Lord Buddha which depicts Mahayana influence on Sri Lankan art during the early Anuradhapura period. Also there is a entrance to a tunnel which is said to be connected to the ancient tunnel system in the south eastern rock mountains of the central hills of Sri Lanka. "

The Dhowa rock temple is famous for its large unfinished Buddha image, carved into the rock face, which is considered an example of Mahayanasculpture. The temple dates back over 2000 years.[3][4]The area gained the name Dhowa as it is located within a ring of mountains, with a river which flows across the plateau.

It is believed that the temple bears a history dating back to about 2,000 years. Historically, the Dhowa temple was known as the Kumbaltissa Ariyagala Vehera, named after its chief priest who had provided sanctuary for King Walagamba, who turned the cave into a temple.[5]

Work at the temple was not completed during the reign of King Walagamba, but was fully completed during the Kandyan Kingdom. "

" Dowa Rock Temple is on the main road of Bandarawela Budulla, around 7km’s away from Bandarawela town. This is a protected heritage site with the historical background dating back to around 2000 years. According to historic books and stories, King Walagamba was hiding in this cave to protect from foreign invasions and he himself carved the Buddha Statue and it is half finished statue. The king has to left the place before he finish the carve thus it remained half finished.
The temple was not completed during the reign of King Walagamba, but it was completed during the Kandyan Kingdom. One important characteristic of this place is that the temple is built under the rock. And this place is also famous for its large unfinished Buddha Statue which is 12m high, carved into the rock face which is considered an example of Mahayana sculpture.
Paintings in the shrining room depict various Jathaka Stories. The Canopy of the rock is decked with paintings of lotus and various other flowers. Among those paintings, Ath-Gon Satana (a fight between a tusker and a bull) is featured. Cobra images and structures are also prominent here. "

" Unique temple with Rock caves situated in Bandarawela-Badulla Road, built by King Walagamba. The temple has a statue of Lord Buddha, on the Rock, which is famous for being built in two different eras of Sri Lankan art. Locals consider it as a sacred place, therefore it is advisable to wear appropriate white clothes. "

" You can be a regular traveler or a Traveller for once in a lifetime. You can ask for nightlife, you can ask for culture, or you can ask for wildlife. Be it anything, but the rock cave temple complex is a must visit if you visit Sri Lanka. The temple is situated at a close proximity to a beautiful city of bandarawela which is a major city in uva province in Sri Lanka. In my recent visit to the temple I could witness that the temple has managed to retain its original smell original color original shape and of course the original natural beauty which is hidden from the busy streets. You will be amazed to observe the beauty and the creativity of the pictures that painted on the rock layers inside the Caves. Most of the paintings describe some life events took place in his journey to enlightment of Lord Buddha. I am sure this is going to be great travelling tip which will be helpful for you to arrange your trip throughout the area. Once you're finished watching the temple complex come to road and try to catcha bus to rawana ella falls which is another must visit place if you love strange stories. Please feel free to ask anything. "

" Beautiful and bucolic, but the proprietor's attitude left a horribly sour taste. After placing a donation in the donation box not to his liking, he demanded more because I appeared to be a foreigner. He was both crass and unbecoming anyone at a Buddhist temple; and I consequently felt obliged to take my original contribution back and felt forced to leave. It was quite a saddening experience and yet another example of how Sri Lanka has been bitten by greed and a sadly increasing tendency towards discriminatory and prejudicial practices...! "
