" Hassan and Adrar Were Exceptional, Even in the Face of COVID-19

During our 2.5-week tour of Morocco, my husband and I decided to take two road trips. The first was a 2-day bespoke tour from Tangier to Fes (Tangier–Tétouan–Chefchaouen–Volubilis–Meknès–Fes). The second was Adrar's standard 3-day Fes-to-Marrakech tour, spending a night in the Sahara and traveling through the valleys and mountains to Marrakech.

Our communication with Youssef at Adrar was prompt, clear, and comprehensive from the beginning, some four months out. Some of the sites we wanted to see on our 2-day tour were not places they normally took clients, but they went out of their way to find the information needed and to make the visit happen seamlessly.

I cannot sing the praises of our driver, Hassan, loudly enough. He arrived promptly to pick us up in Tangier, cheerfully attended to our luggage, saw to our needs en route, and provided an abundance of information about the areas of Morocco that we were driving through (history, geography, economy, culture, language, etc.). Although we had not made arrangements in advance for a guide in Fes (and yes, you do really need a guide in Fes, even if you have an excellent sense of direction, because the medina is a unlike any labyrinth you've encountered before and the locals harass you endlessly), Hassan suggested that we hire someone he knew. She turned out to be phenomenal: extremely knowledgeable, taking us everyone we wanted to go, and an absolute delight. The two of them organized an exceptional day in which we drove to sights outside the city center and then walked through the medina all afternoon. It was one of the best days we had in Morocco.

As our trip unfolded, the pandemic situation became ever more urgent. During our 3-day tour, after an unforgettable camel trek through the Erg Chebbi dunes, we arrived at our camp, which--much to our shock--had WiFi, to discover that the government was closing the borders. There was little we could do in the moment because we were so far away from any of the airports. So we decided to continue on to Marrakech as planned. That night, Hassan arranged a bottle of wine for us (we had let it slip in Fes that it was the one of our birthdays) and told our hosts, who surprised us with a cake and sang a special "Happy Birthday" song that we will never forget! Our only regret is that we were so tired from the long day that we could not stay around the campfire longer to enjoy the fantastic drumming of our hosts.

As we made our way to Marrakech over the next two days, it became increasingly clearer that we might have to cut our trip short: the cafes and many sites were closed, and the news from around the world was not good. We nevertheless soldiered on--we had little choice, really. Hassan remained cheerful throughout. If he was worried, he was hiding it extremely well. We spent the time talking with him, listening to music together, and just enjoying the scenery.

When we did finally arrive in Marrakech, it was clear that we had to leave as soon as possible. Hassan was available to take us to the airport the next morning. When we parted, my husband and I were extremely sad to say goodbye to him, more so than we were about cutting short our trip. The silver lining is that we can go back to Marrakech someday (soon!) we hope and see Hassan again.

When the world returns to normalcy and you plan your Morocco vacation, don't hesitate to hire Hassan and Adrar to see this wonderful country. You will not regret it. "

" My wife and I traveled from New York to Morocco and decided to take a 3 day tour of the country in addition to other site-seeing adventures on our own. Being that we were going to be with the same person for three straight days, we were worried that we would get a tour-guide that we didn’t completely trust or feel comfortable with. Luckily, our tour guide, Hassan, quickly put our reservations to rest. He was more kind, knowledgable, patient, generous, and fun than we could have asked for. I imagine our trip to Morocco will remain one of the top adventures of my life for years to come, and much of that is thanks to Hassan. Highly recommended! "
