About Clean Cities Project

Our Project aims to contribute to the Climate and Sustainability in Malawi and abroad. In Malawi, very little waste is recycled or treated. 80% of waste ends up in landfills or the natural environment where it is burnt. Malawi produces more than 75,000 tonnes of plastics each year and much of the plastic waste ends up in the country's landfills. Where for example plastic waste can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Therefore, the Clean Cities project aims at solving this environmental problem by accessing the plastic waste in landfills and recycling the plastic waste into eco-bricks which we plan to donate to vulnerable households in slums and rural residents to help in building improved pit latrines since more than 5 million people in Malawi do not have decent toilet facilities.Secondly, 97% of households presently rely on illegally and unsustainably sourced biomass (charcoal and firewood) for domestic cooking and heating energy. This is harmful to the environment and people´s health since it releases billows of smoke and carbon dioxide and increases deforestation and degradation which contributes to 60% of greenhouse gas emissions in Malawi. Therefore, our project seeks to curb deforestation and the emission of greenhouse gases by converting organic municipal solid wastes into eco-friendly briquettes as energy for cooking and heating to substitute traditional charcoal and firewood and promote the adoption of fuel-efficient cook-stove technologies. Finally, there are high illiteracy levels regarding proper waste management practices and sanitation in Malawi. This has led to outbreaks of WASH-related diseases such as cholera. By February 2023, the country registered more than 40,000 cholera cases. Our project will further focus on conducting awareness campaigns and civic education on proper waste management practices among slums and rural residents, schools, students, and young people. We believe our project will accelerate action toward the UN SDGs.
