About TA Supporting the Implementation of the Malawi M001 Road Rehabilitation Project
With assistance from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union the Malawi Government received financing for the construction and rehabilitation of the M001 Road which is about 301km. The M001 Road is a commercial road and part of the trade route of the North-South Corridor that links the two port cities of Dar-el-Salaam in Tanzania and Durban in South Africa. Approximately 1,145 km of the North-South Corridor passes through Malawi via the M001 road. For Malawi, the primary economic function of the road is the long-distance transportation of import goods mainly fuel from the port of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania. The road provides for import of goods to the mining activities along the road corridor in Malawi and is the primary route from Lilongwe to the Northern part of the country serving district administrative and trading centers along its route.
