Description

Ignore? Kill? Lock up?

Or neuter?

For the past years we gained a lot of experience in organizing neutering campaigns so the number of stray dogs will decrease in a humane way. Thanks to our efforts the num-ber of stray dogs has already decreased in several areas of Turkey.

It is now time to take the next, bigger and more professional, step, which will help all stray dogs in Turkey, by working and documenting systematically. This will become the guidance for all municipalities in Turkey.

We cannot emphasize it enough; catch, spay/neuter and return is the only structural, humane and cost effective way to end the overpopulation of stray dogs.

By spaying 70% or more female dogs, the number of stray dogs will start to decrease substantially.

The number of stray dogs in a certain area adjusts to the supporting capacity (available food, water and shelter) of the surroundings.

When the dogs are captured, killed or rehomed, the population will always grow back to the original size.

As the sources (food, water and shelter) do not have to be shared with as many dogs, the litters will become larger and pups will have better chances of survival.
You can kill, imprison or rehome dogs until the end of time, it’s no solution and in the end will not diminish the number of dogs. No better proof than the situation in Turkey itself.

Spaying/neutering puts a stop to a lot of animal suffering!

Moreover, on the long term spaying/neutering is less expensive than the brutal methods which are being used today.

We are going to spay/neuter all the dogs of Ayvalik; a total of 1.200 dogs within a 15km circle from the centre of the city. By spaying/neutering all dogs in such a large area the chance of new arrival of (fertile) dogs from outside the city is small. In a total of eight months time we will hold eight neutering-marathons, each time spaying/neutering 150 dogs.

Furthermore, the StraydogsCampaign Foundation commits to returning to Ayvalik and Cunda every spring and fall to spay/neuter new dogs, as well as new cats on Cunda.

This project will prove that catch, neuter and return also works in Turkey!

The whole operation is going to cost € 45.000 euro.

We do not yet have the money, but need to raise this amount as soon as possible if we want to put an end to the brutal methods that are being used nowadays in Turkey to ‘control’ the stray dog population. There is a shelter in Ayvalik which has a surgery room and caretakers working for the municipality.

Gulnihal, a volunteer of the neutering campaigns on Cunda, will be hired by the StraydogsCampaign Foundation and will manage the shelter during the campaign, catching the dogs, caring for the dogs and returning them once they healed. She will also set up educational projects in the municipality of Ayvalik.

The municipality of Ayvalik will sign a protocol which will oblige them to respect Gulnihal’s leadership of the shelter, supply dry food for the dogs and to no longer kill or lock-up stray dogs in Ayvalik or dump them elsewhere.
