My vision is for a distinctive space of critical and contemplative immersion in the teachings and theology of the Bible, in cross-cultural dialogue with the philosophies and praxes of major faith and wisdom traditions - particularly Asian wisdoms - that have emerged over the last three millennia of world history. In particular, I champion a broad non-fundamentalist stance that examines 2,000 years of Christian theological explorations spanning Patristic, Western Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Reformed and Pentecostal expressions without prejudice against alternative voices. Beyond biblical literalism and fundamentalism, I adopt an open and inquiring stance that reflexively guards against premature closure on canonical, exegetical and hermeneutical issues.My approach to Christianity sees it as a world Christianity rather than a mere world religion defined and delimited by white male Anglophonic voices (see Karkkainen 2013). Diverse voices of Christian theologizing from within varied cultural contexts are given epistemic space and valued. I envision research and academic excellence in the fertile nexus of biblical theological and non-Christian (particularly Asian) philosophical ideas. In so doing, I advocate a constructive Christian theology for a pluralistic yet inescapably techno-disruptive, multivocal, and increasingly Asia-centric world.
