Description

St Helena Government (SHG)

The Vision of St Helena Government is:
“Strengthened community and family life through vibrant economic growth, a healthy environment and with opportunities for all to participate, within a framework of effective government and law.”

St Helena will make itself a more attractive place to live and visit through its new Airport – building an economy with real prospects for the people living here to make a better life for themselves. A buoyant economy will also provide a bigger tax base for the Government to provide better public services.

The Island wants to strengthen community and family life and to do this must create the conditions for a large number of Saints who have gone overseas to come home. This can only be achieved by improving the standards of living, through economic growth and better public services, with opportunities for all to participate.

Critical to both social development and economic growth is the effective management of St Helena’s unique and wonderful natural (and built) environment. This is one of the Island’s key selling points and a vital ingredient in its tourism offer, while also a vital element in the health and well-being of Saints.

SHG is made up of six Directorates; Corporate Services (HR, Finance, IT, Corporate Support and Policy and Planning), Health and Social Welfare, Education and Employment, Environment and Natural Resources, Airport and Police.

St Helena Airport Project

St Helena’s first ever Airport is set to open in early 2016. Construction of the Airport is well underway and is not only a mammoth engineering challenge – it positions the Island for the biggest transformation in her history.

More than two years on from the airport decision of November 2011 and the signing of a £250 million design, build and operate contract between St Helena Government and South African contractors, Basil Read Ltd Pty – we plot the remarkable engineering challenge being tackled and the progress already made on the Airport.
