The American International School of Lomé (AISL), established in 1967, is a private, non-profit, college preparatory day school offering an educational program to students of all nationalities from Nursery (age 2) through Grade 12. The School is fully accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools through Grade 12.Semester 1 runs early September through January, and Semester 2 from February till mid-June. This dynamic school is growing, but the much appreciated family atmosphere remains.Organization: A 5-6 member Board of Directors governs the school. Four or five Board members are elected by the American International School of Lomé Parents Association, comprised of parents or guardians of students enrolled in the school. One board member is appointed by the U.S. Ambassador and the other board member is the Director.Curriculum: The curriculum follows the American system with emphasis on inquiry, problem solving and student research. A senior thesis (independent research project) is required for graduation. Besides the core subjects of math, science, language arts and social studies, students are also required to take French, music, art, Educational Technology and PE. There are also electives such as Spanish and theatre, as well as fourth year science options of physics and or environmental science. The high school math program includes classes from algebra 1 to calculus, as well as honors classes. We also offer AP courses when possible. Instruction is in English, and there are ESL support courses for High School students if needed. The IOWA Test of Basic Skills is given each May to students in grades 1-8, and our students prepare for and take the SAT. Most of our graduates attend four year colleges and universities in the US and Canada.
