About Project Kpalime

Since their inception in 1986 until 2007, Togo's special education schools received 100% of their funding via a contractual agreement between Caritas, the largest welfare association in Germany, and the Togolese government. However, after stipulated obligations were not adhered to by Togo's government, Caritas gradually reduced its aid until completely removing it in 2010. After several years of subsisting off the donations of local community initiatives, persistent protests by the parents of the children affected by these budget cuts pushed the Togolese government to agree to covering the personnel costs of each school. As a result, each of school is now responsible for covering all expenses outside of the personnel costs, including utilities (electric, water, internet), school supplies, student meals (breakfast and lunch), transportation, and more.Project Kpalime's goal is simple: to implement sustainable social enterprises in an effort to eliminate reliance on outside funding.
