Ahh, Vulyk. It's been almost a year since I wrote a review about this place, and it still continues to deliver the same quality service and food that I enjoyed when I first found it off the beaten path here in Lviv. If you're tired of hitting up the super-touristy center and want a taste of "traditional" Ukrainian food and spirit, Vulyk is a must-see. While still being located close enough to the center to be accessible by foot, it maintains a healthy distance from Plosha Rynok and the swarms of tourists that flood Old Town during the peak seasons.

First of all, the layout and decor of this place is quite nice - it sticks to the traditional Ukrainian decor while adding a few little quirks that set it apart from some of the other chains around town. Plus, the patio during the summer is phenomenal - it has plenty of shade and is a bit secluded from noise and pedestrians walking by.

The menu is huge, and you should be prepared for the occasional disappointment as they don't always have the ingredients on hand to cook every item in the list. However, they've managed to have a good track record in all of my experiences with them, with only a few minor exceptions.

Prices are quite affordable - expect to pay 30-50% less than what you'd pay at a tourist place in the center, and portions are quite healthy. I highly recommend the bonash (it's a Carpathian cornmeal porridge that is super filling) and shashlik (meat shish kebabs) if you want a full meal.

Service is definitely a notch above what you'd expect from Lviv - I haven't checked whether they all speak English, but I've definitely seen them eagerly try to communicate with people in English and Polish without much problem.

All in all, whenever I have a visiting guest inquire about traditional Ukrainian cooking, I wholeheartedly recommend Vulyk. The only thing better would probably be your own personal Ukrainian grandmother. "
