KMS student wins Alaska Municipal League's Essay Contest

Mrs. Lhotka’s sixth-grade students recently participated in a statewide essay contest sponsored by the Alaska Municipal League. Designed specifically for Alaska sixth-grade students, the essay aims to elicit the suggestions and opinions of a younger generation about their municipal government leadership and communities. The contest gives students a chance to use their language arts skills, experience and knowledge to cr...eatively voice an opinion on what their generation perceives as the needs of the municipalities they live in.

The essay question posed to students was, “If I were Mayor, I would…” and Kodiak Middle School’s very own Maria Velasco rose to the occasion and deliver the winning essay for our District. Congratulations, Maria!

Maria Velasco’s AML Essay Submission:

If I Were Mayor, I would…

If I were mayor, I would attempt to diminish a serious issue in our community: child abuse. One major reason we need to stop child abuse is because it can be fatal. More than four children die of abuse on a daily basis in the United States alone. An additional point to consider is that children who suffer from abuse are far more prone to abuse their offspring, creating a cycle full of dread. In addition, the state of Alaska has the most reported child abuse, and the numbers are only getting higher with 13% of children having suffered from maltreatment.

So what’s the solution? Opponents say there is no possible way to eliminate all cases of child maltreatment, that is factual, however, we can reduce the number of cases. One solution that I believe could work would be to create a program that teaches children that it’s not wrong to report mistreatment, as they are not at fault. After all, 95% of children know-who their perpetrator is, and less then a fourth of them have reported them. Not to mention, most children often blame themselves for the wrongdoings of their abusers.

Another possible solution would be to give more funds to investigate reported cases. We could start a fundraiser to cover the money needed, I’m certain people would cooperate. These solutions might not be effective, but it wouldn’t hurt to try.

Kodiak High School Student Government attends 2019 Spring AASG conference.

Roughly 350 Alaska student leaders traveled from far and wide to experience and gather in the “Forefront of the Last Frontier” — Bethel, Alaska the largest community on the Kuskokwim river. For three days we cultivated student government skills and communicated with other delegates from around the state.

Delegates got to create and debate resolutions on issues students find important. Some resolution ...topics were: permitting seniors to decorate graduation caps, abolishing Unalaska City schools dress code, the implementation of an Alaska Native Teaching and Educational Program, ending child marriage in Alaska and our primary conference resolution: the continuation of funding to the Alaska Marine Highway System.

Workshops included a variety of different activities such as Yupik beading, a walk along the Kuskokwim river, survival skills, a debate class titled “Change My Mind”, line dancing, an improv class, Yupik dance and many more.

Nick Hanson, an American Ninja Warrior from Unalakleet, came to talk about the struggles Alaska youth face especially in rural villages. He touched on many topics, including suicide prevention and alcoholism, but his main message was to live up to your full potential every day.

The other speaker we got to hear from was Senator Lisa Murkowski. She spoke on the importance of Alaska youth and the power of student voice. She also spoke on many issues the State of Alaska is facing right now such as the Marine Highway System budget cuts. She opened the floor so delegates could ask her questions for a more personal touch.

When: Thursday, May 16th at 7pm; Friday, May 17th at 7pm; Saturday, May 18th at 2pm and 7pm Where: Drama Pod Who: Kodiak Middle School Drama Club... Cost: $5

This May, the KMS Drama Club will present a new play, the award-winning: "The Wong Kids in the Secret of the Space Chupacabra, Go!," by Lloyd Suh.

Synopsis: Violet and Bruce Wong just don’t fit in with the other Earth kids. Sure, they have superpowers, they’re just not very good ones. But when an evil beast called the Space Chupacabra appears, intent on universal destruction, The Wong Kids must travel to far reaches of outer space to stop it …if they can only stop bickering. Violet and Bruce ultimately realize that being different isn’t just okay, it might just be the most important thing, like, ever.

For over two months, these students have been working on embodying different characters and creatures, transforming the Drama Pod into several different locations, designing special lighting and sound effects, and looking forward to exhibiting their work for the Kodiak public.

Stand out performances are: Madison Moore as Violet and Zoe Pikus as Bruce. The play is directed by Jared Griffin, and this is his seventh production with the KMS Drama Club. Several Kodiak High School Drama Club students have taken on technical and directing roles, too.

Hope to see you there!
