123abc.com is a learning universe in which the process of learning takes a life of its own. We start out with all the material we need to cover. Around this we create small gamelike “apps”, which we call challenges. These will in an engaging way convey the concepts. To make it more interesting we add reward mechanisms and gamification where appropriate. The crux, however, is always that the focus of each app is on learning and not playing a game.

All material is carefully divided into categories, subjects, skills and challenges. Formalizing this allows us to measure how well a student is learning a particular concept and adjust the learning process if need be. We call the program which does this the learning engine. With this we make sure each student is presented with the best challenges to facilitate learning.

Consider traditional class based teaching with over 20 students, where a teacher has to present the material in a way so everybody understands it. Our learning engine creates a tailored learning environment specifically for each student. There is no lowest common denominator here. It is important to note we do not intend 123abc as a substitute for traditional schooling but rather as a modern day homework supplement.

Each year when a student starts a new school year the starting page, or home screen if you will, is a new theme which can be built upon and expanded. It could for instance be a space station or a pirate ship. Extra items for the theme can be purchased by virtual coins which are awarded in the challenges. Every challenge is tailored to offer skills from a certain subject.
