Description

Parent education classes were established in LAUSD in 1926 as a joint venture with the California State PTA, California State Department of Education and LAUSD. These classes are designed to facilitate the parents’ role in their child’s growth and development within a variety of learning opportunities. They have been held at the Emerson site since 1976, serving thousands of families, and fostering relationships that have endured for three and a half decades. We are proud to say that we are now enrolling the children of “children” who also attended Emerson with their parents.

Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, Emerson Parent Education lost its funding from LAUSD in June, 2012. We are now a fee-based program, independent of LAUSD, but based in our long-time home on the Emerson Adult Learning Center campus.

All classes are taught by credentialed professionals who model both parent-child and teacher-child learning. Discussion topics are relevant to each specific age-group and aid parents to clarify their parenting philosophy and long-term family goals. The classes strive to address topics and concerns relevant to parents with children in each specific age-range, as well as broader parenting and family issues. Each discussion provides time for parents to share experiences and ideas to support and assist each other.
