About Hackett Mill Gallery

Hackett Mill, founded by Michael Hackett and Francis Mill, presents rare works from the 1950s and 1960s by important American, European, and Asian artists.

Description

Hackett Mill makes its new home on Natoma Street in San Francisco. Located next door to the SFMOMA in a building the San Francisco Chronicle’s urban design critic John King calls an “idiosyncratic gem,” the new space abandons the traditional gallery model of separated areas for exhibitions, offices and a back room and is instead boldly and unapologetically open throughout. The way the space embraces and showcases art is more reflective of co-owners Michael Hackett and Francis Mill’s philosophy of living with and experiencing art on a daily basis.

For decades the owners have been active in placing works by important mid-20th Century artists in both private and public collections. An area of personal passion for the owners is the Bay Area Figurative Movement (1950-1965) led by David Park. Hackett Mill is the exclusive representative of the Estate of David Park. Hackett Mill’s dedication to this historical movement also includes showcasing the following artists: Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, Joan Brown, Manuel Neri, Nathan Oliveira, Paul Wonner and William Theophilus Brown.

Another area of focus is Abstract Expressionism. Through thoughtful research, curation and placement of works by artists including Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Hans Hofmann, Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner, Kazuo Shiraga and Robert Motherwell, among others, the gallery offers a platform for unique, historical juxtapositions. These dialogues are of particular significance to the owners as they personally identify with the struggle an artist encounters when they circumvent the expected conventional trends of the status quo. Along with Park, Hackett Mill represents David Beck, Manuel Neri, Masatoyo Kishi, Raimonds Staprans and Brian Wall and the estates of Robert Schwartz and Frank Lobdell.

Hackett and Mill each have over thirty years of experience in the fine arts. They bring their varied backgrounds together to present a respected vision to the Bay Area’s artistic community. In addition to Francis Mill’s BA in architecture and a BFA and MFA in fine art, he was professor and dean of graduate studies at the Academy of Art in San Francisco for ten years, which informs his scholarly approach to collecting and building collections. Michael Hackett also tapped into his passion for art early. In the 1980s, he began nurturing young artistic talents and he has now been dealing and collecting art on an international level for over thirty years. Together Hackett and Mill combine their expertise toward developing meaningful and inspired collections, exhibitions, and lectures.

We are pleased to present "California Luminaries," a selection of rare paintings by Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud and Elmer Bischoff, now on view through October 31.

Included in the show is Wayne Thiebaud's "Double Decker Cones" (1995), shown here. Known for his depictions of ordinary objects encountered by chance, most notably sweets and food, which he isolates and transforms. He tilts his subjects toward the picture plane and reduces them to basic formal units, drawing... on his early experience as a commercial illustrator. The resulting still lifes are luminous celebrations of pigment and iconic, nostalgic imagery. According to art historian Steven Nash, "This signature style of Thiebaud's paint handling - the rich, smooth dragging of paint across a surface or around a shape both proclaims the luscious texture of oils and often transforms itself into the very material being depicted, from frosting or whipped cream to metal."

"Running Horse" (2015) exemplifies David Beck’s unquenchable desire to learn and experiment with the unknown. As with many of his art historical predecessors, the act of exploration and process was at the core of his immense creativity and was informed by his curiosity. Trial and error guided much of his work, especially his kinetic sculptures. These animated pieces recall eighteenth century automata as well as nineteenth century crank toys and whirligigs and enhance the ench...anting nature of these fantastical creations.

The act of discovery is the heart of David Beck’s artwork. His early box sculptures are exquisite contained worlds, boasting fine details that pull the viewer into dazzling environments of private moments and playful humanity. Imbued with hidden secrets and mysteries, these complex constructions maintain a sensitivity to the viewers' experience of interior and exterior, while kinesthetic sculptural elements engage the viewer and assist in breaking down these barriers. These s...culptures demonstrate Beck’s interest in covertness and intimacy, yet still create a sense of jovial wonder about something grander.

Maintaining a rigorous work ethic throughout his career, Beck asserted himself in the San Francisco jazz community as a tool to break the withdrawn lifestyle of the dedicated artist. This video of "Jazz Band" emphasizes Beck’s cross-disciplinary synthesis of the arts and demonstrates an encyclopedic visual complexity that appeals to viewing his work, as well as a sensual pleasure for our jaded times.

Today we're celebrating #JoanBrown, who was born on February 13, 1938. A graduate of the California School of Fine Arts (now the @sfaiofficial), her dense, thickly layered early paintings showcase her intensely autobiographical and idiosyncratic brand of Bay Area Figuration. Many of Brown's early paintings, including "Noel at the Table with a Large Bowl of Fruit (1963)," document her son's childhood. .
