Our organization is recognized at the University of Connecticut as an organization that educates in every aspect that our mission statement includes. This organization was founded February 5, 1986 by Deloris Ann-Marie Abrahams, Stephanie Gold Smith, and Denkue Wom as the "West Indian Student Awareness Organization". We have been honored by the Vice Chancellor for two years (1997-1999) with the Vice Chancellor student award. In 1999 our organization was presented with the Presidents award. On May 3, 2000 our organization also received the Program of the Year award for our planning of the 8th Annual Northeast Region Caribbean Students Conference. On April 16, 2010 our organization was awarded with the University of Connecticut Husky Pride Award and on May 14, 2010 the organization was officially renamed "West Indian Student Organization".
