Description

Animis (from Latin animus, -i "soul, life") Foundation is a non-profit sanctuary dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of domestic animals wildlife. The sanctuary was established in Ocala, Florida in 2010 and incorporates 140 acres of woodlands and pastures. An Eden in which all species could enjoy themselves.
Most of the residents of the sanctuary have been abused, starved and neglected. Several have come from seizures by other rescue groups including the Humane Society and the Marion County Shelter. Currently over 600 animals call Animis their home. These include horses, water buffalo, cows, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, exotic parrots, emu, rabbits, ferrets, cats, dogs, deer, marsupials, rodents, and reptiles.
With hard economic times the equines of Marion County, being the horse capital of the US, were facing a crisis. With nowhere to turn many horses were being euthanized for lack of ability of the owners to care & feed them. In the first 3 years Animis rescued 125 horses from certain death. The sanctuary employs a USDA certified Veterinarian skilled in large animal care. With his help and the help of the loyal and caring staff these horses are now living healthy & happy lives.
Animis provides a unique and much needed service to the public by taking in injured and orphaned wildlife throughout Marion County and even into Alachua, Volusia & Orange counties. There is no charge for this service. The wildlife department at the sanctuary cares for and releases back into the wild over 500 native animals native to Florida each year. These animals include migratory songbirds, raptors, squirrels, opossums, skunk, raccoons, bats, tortoises, frogs and snakes. Non-native species such as red fox and armadillo are also rehabbed. To ensure the best possible care the sanctuary employs a full time federal and state licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
Every week calls are received asking for help. Animis addresses each situation on a case by case basis. If we cannot help we will find another organization that can. The sanctuary runs solely on donations made by the generosity of the public and the founders. You can be part of this important work by supporting us with your spare change!
