Conserving our heritage is the Historical Society’s primary concern. Beginning in 1927 with a citizens group’s collection of historical materials and the forming of the Office of County Historian in the early 1950’s, the Historical Society now preserves and curates two of our county's most cherished buildings, the 1882 Bidwell-Wood House (oldest residence in Sarasota County) and the 1901 Crocker Memorial Church, now repurposed as a community resource for meetings, events, weddings and performances. Visit them in beautiful Pioneer Park, on 12th Street one-half block east of Tamiami Trail (Route 41), where you can also see the Whitaker Cemetery, final resting place of the earliest European settlers in the beautiful Sarasota Bay area.
