About Catherine Fleming Hood

I have a deep love for music and the piano. I aspire to share that while encouraging the same in others. Currently I offer lessons focused on piano primarily as well as lessons focused on saxophone, drums and voice as needed. All lessons are one-on-one.

Description

I have been teaching for most of my life with focus on both baroque - romantic as well as contemporary music. Before launching my own studio, I worked directly with my classical piano teacher/mentor and substituted for her in the teaching of her 70 student weekly rotation. Currently I'm on a midi praise team (keyboards and computers) with church, perform occasionally locally with voice and piano or keyboard, and volunteer with the community theater. I encourage students to participate in the Guild program of musical standards, evaluation and encouragement. Lessons include theory and the interests of the student. I generally use the Alfred library of teaching materials.

I am an RN and a mother, and I also love to make time to teach little (and big) ones who are interested in learning. I suggest starting at the age of 5 if there is interest, and no age is too old!

If interested, I include my students in Guild rating system of artists, recitals, open mic events and worship team opportunities. We are also blessed to have theater locally with open auditions for children (and adults!) throughout the year. I am involved, as are my children and students, in plays and musical theater there as scheduling permits. If there is an interest, we will prepare vocally together and discuss auditions as opportunities arise.

My philosophy is that the study of an art form is a necessary ingredient for growth and a well-integrated life. I strive for excellence and understand that learning is a process. My main goals include evidence of progress and change in the student’s quality of playing, understanding of the music and enjoyment of what we do!

Performance opportunities are available. During the piano study, children will learn to read, write and play simple tunes for family and friends, as well as for their own enjoyment. Adults will learn to read, write and play music, as well as learn to play favorite tunes at sight.

PRACTICE GUIDELINES
These guidelines are designed for the student’s benefit; the more practice time invested, the greater the results.
