TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE BIRTH CEREMONY OF SWAMI YOGANANDA

Pre-monastic name Jogendranath Roy Chaudhury Date of Birth: 30 March 1861

Jogin was one of the six disciples whom Sri Ramakrishna regarded as ishvarakotis. He was spiritually inclined from boyhood. He first met the Master when he was studying for school final examination. Since he lived in the neighbourhood of Kali Temple, he started visiting Sri Ramakrishna frequently. After the Master’s passing, Jogin accompanied Holy Mother on her pilgrimage. At Vrindavan she initiated him by giving a sacred Mantra. After his return from the pilgrimage he joined Baranagar Math and took the vows of sannyasa, assuming the new name Yogananda. However, he dedicated his life to the service of Holy Mother. Whenever Mother visited Kolkata, Swami Yogananda would arrange for Mother’s accommodation, usually in rented premises, and stayed with her to look after her needs. He also spent some time in Varanasi and other places doing severe austerities which told on his health. When Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission on 1 May 1897, he made Yogananda its Vice-President (Swami Brahmananda was made the President). Owing to his delicate health, he did not live long. He passed away on 28 March 1899 at the age of 38, causing much sorrow to Holy Mother and the other disciples of Sri Ramakrishna.

মায়ের প্রথম মন্ত্রশিষ্য 'অর্জুন-চক্ষু' যোগেন। বৃন্দাবনে ঠাকুর যখন শ্রীশ্রীমাকে দর্শন দিয়ে যোগেনকে দীক্ষা দিতে বলেন, মা রাজি হননি। কিন্তু বারবার যখনই একই নির্দেশ ঠাকুর দিয়েছিলেন তখন আর মা দ্বিধা করেননি। শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুরের পট ও দেহাবশেষের কৌটো(আত্মারামের কৌটা) সামনে রেখে পুজো করতে করতে ভাবাবিষ্ট অবস্থায় তাঁকে মন্ত্রদান করেন মা। যোগানন্দ মাকে এরকম ভাবাবিষ্ট অবস্থায় দেখেছিলেন দক্ষিণেশ্বরে রাত্রিযাপনকালের একেবারে প্রথম দিকে। যোগানন্দ দেখলেন জ্যোৎস্না রাতে চাঁদের আলোয় মা নহবতে সমাধিস্থা। চওড়া লালপেড়ে শাড়ি। সালঙ্কারা , নাকে নথ, গা থেকে আঁচল খসে উড়ে উড়ে পড়ছে কিন্তু মার একেবারেই হুঁশ নেই। যোগেন ঠাকুরকে পরীক্ষা করতে গিয়ে নিজেই চিরদিনের মতো বিজিত হয়ে গেলেন। সেদিন যোগানন্দ উপলব্ধি করেছিলেন মায়ের স্বরূপ। আর কোনওদিনই মাকে মানবীরূপে দেখেননি। প্রথমে দর্শন, পরে দীক্ষা। মায়ের কৃপায় যোগানন্দ হয়ে উঠলেন তাঁর অন্তরঙ্গ। মা বলেছেন, "যোগীনের মতো আমাকে কেউ ভালবাসত না।" যোগানন্দের শেষ অসুখের সময় মা বলেছেন - 'তার জন্য ভেবে ভেবে শরীর শুকিয়ে গিয়েছিল, মন ভাল নয়, যোগীনের অসুখ বাড়ছে তো কাঁদছি। আবার যোগীন ভাল থাকছে তো ভাল থাকছি।' যোগীনের স্মৃতি চিহ্ন মা যত্ন করে রাখতেন। ঠাকুরের শরীর যাওয়ার পর ছেলেদের মধ্যে যোগীনই প্রথম তুলে নেয় মায়ের সেবার ভার। বারো বছর মায়ের জগন্মাতৃত্বে সদা সচেতন থেকে অনুপম সেবা করে গেছেন। যোগীনের সেবা তো নয়, যেন উপাসনা। আজ মায়ের এই প্রথম মন্তশিষ্য 'অর্জুন-চক্ষু' স্বামী যোগানন্দ মহারাজের পূণ্য জন্মতিথিতে জানাই তাঁর শ্রীচরণে শতকোটি প্রণতি। জয় মা!!!

Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna:

“The party entered holy Benares by boat along the Ganges. When Sri Ramakrishna's eyes fell on this city of Siva, where had accumulated for ages the devotion and piety of countless worshippers, he saw it to be made of gold, as the scriptures declare.

He was visibly moved. During his stay in the city he treated every particle of its earth with utmost respect.

At the Manikarnika Ghat, the great cremation ground of the city, he actually saw Siva, with ash-covered body and tawny matted hair, serenely approaching each funeral pyre and breathing into the ears of the corpses the mantra of liberation; and then the Divine Mother removing from the dead their bonds.

Thus he realized the significance of the scriptural statement that anyone dying in Benares attains salvation through the grace of Siva.

He paid a visit to Trailanga Swami, the celebrated monk, whom he later declared to be a real paramahamsa, a veritable image of Siva.”

The doctors have removed the dressing on the surgery area. The ‘wound ‘ is healing well.
