What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is the study of brain-behavior relationships. A neuropsychological evaluation includes psychological, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological principles and tests to assess neurocognitive, behavioral, and emotional status and their relationship to normal and abnormal brain functioning. The comprehensive assessment involves measures of intellectual functioning, language, visuo-spatial skills, memory, attention, motor abilities, and executive functioning. Findings are interpreted to establish individual patterns of strengths and weaknesses, which are used to generate recommendations for treatment, academic planning, return-to-play, and home/community functioning.

Who needs a neuropsychological evaluation?

Evaluation and consultation are appropriate for individuals with any suspected or diagnosed condition that may affect cognitive functioning, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), mild traumatic brain injury (concussion), stroke, brain tumor, seizure disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), learning disorders, developmental delays, or psychological/psychiatric diagnoses.

How does a neuropsychological evaluation differ from a school evaluation?

If you have concerns only about your child's learning or academic progress, the public school district may administer a basic psychological evaluation at no cost to you, which will typically include a cognitive measure (IQ test) and academic achievement testing. The results will be used to determine eligibility for accommodations or modifications to your child's curriculum, such as via a 504 Plan or an Individualized Education Program (IEP). School psychologists typically have master's degrees in school psychology (although some have doctoral degrees) and can make recommendations for school placement and special education eligibility. In general, school psychologists do not diagnose medical or mental health conditions.

The scope of a neuropsychological evaluation is much broader and more comprehensive, places emphasis on brain-behavior relationships, and results in recommendations for all aspects of a child’s functioning. When appropriate, a diagnosis will be made. As cognitive and academic achievement testing are typically included, the evaluation can be used in lieu of a school evaluation. Many schools will accept neuropsychological evaluations to determine if the child is gifted or eligible for a 504 or IEP. However, you are encouraged to discuss concerns with the school first. Please note that a comprehensive psycho-educational evaluation can also be provided, which may be appropriate and sufficient for some children/adolescents.
