Today, our Stearman “Sweet Caroline” is enjoying her 76th birthday, having rolled off the assembly line on September 20, 1943! We are celebrating with a 30 minute aerobatic flight on this gorgeous morning followed by a fresh oil change, a bath, and a belly rub!

For 666 nautical miles and almost 10 flying hours, she purred like a kitten. Stearman 794 “Sweet Caroline” braved headwinds en route and crosswinds on landing to eventually caress the smooth grass runway of the Galesburg Municipal Airport, officially making her the first Stearman to arrive!

Our Stearman was delivered from the factory to the United States Navy on September 22, 1943. Our passenger this morning, a Navy veteran, was delivered into the world on September 23, 1943! How cool is that!

Legacy Biplane is very excited to officially introduce and welcome aboard our new pilot, Michael “Mikey” Matthews!

Mikey has lived a life practically immersed in aviation. He knew early on that flight was not just a choice in life but his destiny. His childhood was the product of a military flying family, and he grew up flying their 1952 Cessna 170B, which set the tone for his tailwheel addiction.

After earning his Flight Instructors certificates in ‘04, he began instructing ...for West Air Aviation flying the High Sierra Desert. Mountain Flying and high/hot altitude operations quickly educated him on performance and weather issues. He also instructed many of the United States Air Force’s finest candidates enrolled in the IFS /IFT Initial Flight Training program. After receiving some professional aerobatic instruction, he began to teach the art himself and has since logged time in aerobatic aircraft such as the Pitts, Eagle, Extra, Giles, MX, Acro Sport/Duster, Swick Taylorcraft, Super Decathlon, Hiperbipe, Rans S 9 & 10, AT-6 Texan, The Entire RV Series, Waco and Stearman.

Matthews returned to North Carolina in 2006 to fly for Dale Earnhardt Jr., flying the EMB 120 Brasilia Turboprop. He has also flown for the King of Speed, Mr Richard Petty and his son Kyle. He has acquired type ratings in the IA Westwind , Astra/Gulfstream 100 Jet, Embraer E145 and is certified as a factory instructor in the Columbia 400.

Mikey has also flown agriculture and aerial application. His tail wheel and aerobatic experience helped earn him a pilot seat in NW Iowa flying radial Air Tractors, Turbine Thrush and M-18 Dromaders for 8 seasons. He claims it’s the most enjoyable job he’s ever had, until he met Sweet Caroline of course.

Now an (ATP) Airline Transport Pilot, he has logged 7000 hours in 120 different aircraft types and has given over 2500 hours dual flight instruction

Matthews says, “I am humbled daily by the wonderful folks that support our cause. I learn something from each and every one of them. The relationships forged by our aerobatic addictions are often lifelong bonds. Cheers to you all! It is often said that flight time is not deducted from ones lifespan! Long live your passion for flying!”

We look forward to sharing our passion for open cockpit flight with you all!

Welcome to 2019!

With our Stearman still in the maintenance hangar, having just finished with her inspections and installation of a new transponder unit required by the FAA, you might be asking “did we repaint Sweet Caroline?” No, we are honored to share our hangar and give temporary refuge to a fellow Stearman enthusiast named Darryl Fisher. He is a very special man on a very special mission. He runs a non-profit organization called Ageless Aviation Dreams, which operates 6 Stearmans around the country and is dedicated to giving free rides to seniors and United States military veterans, living in long-term care facilities. To date, they’ve given more than 3600 rides! Check out their website at agelessaviationdreams.org

This is how we celebrate Christmas here at Legacy Biplane Rides! Purchased, installed, and completed a dynamic balancing of a rare and highly sought after Hamilton Standard propeller! While the wood propeller is beautiful, it just lacks the performance of a metal prop.

Got a wonderful Christmas present from my sister, Stephani Rosenstein, who also designed the Legacy Biplane logo, website, business cards and corporate image. She’s amazing! Check out her work at www.designsbysteph.com
