Last Wednesday, Miss America Nia Franklin and Miss America Outstanding Teen London Hibbs came to visit with patients and families ahead of their appearance in the 6abc Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Both Nia and London met with inpatients as well as families in our outpatient clinic and they even stopped by to say hello to Fezzy! 💕

We are so grateful for their generosity and kindness. Thank you Nia and London!

It's Meet the Staff Monday! 👋 Ever wanted to know a little bit more about your favorite Shriners Hospitals for Children - Philadelphia employee? Each week, we hope to share a brief interview with a staff member that helps our hospital provide the best possible care for our patients.

Meet Kathleen, a nurse in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

How long have you worked at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital? ... I've worked at Shriners since Spring 2016.

What is your favorite part of your job / day? My favorite part of the day is when the Spinal Fusion or Tethering patients get out of bed for their first walk post-op. To see the look of joy, shock, and amazement when they realize they are "straight" and walking without their curve is priceless. The resilience the patients have is astounding and that first walk is a testament to that.

How would you spend your perfect day off? If I only have one day off, I love spending the day outdoors or watching football with my two German Shepherds and my husband. If I have a few days off and can get away, I love traveling to new places while learning about and experiencing a new culture. I've been to over 27 countries and can't wait to experience Finland with my mother in December.

Tell us something that may surprise us about you. Nursing wasn't my first degree. I went back to Villanova University in the BSN Express second degree program. I originally went to undergraduate school for English/Journalism and currently write for Nurse.Org about current trends in healthcare.
