4th and Goal, from a football perspective, is a term used to explain when a team has no choice but to score a touchdown. Unlike 1st and 10 or even 3rd and long, 4th and Goal represents a matter where failure is no longer an option. If the offense fails, the ball is given to the opposing team and they are given the opportunity to achieve success.
In like manner, the purpose of 4th and Goal is to raise disciples of Christ from within the community who understand what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. identified as, "The Urgency of Now." If we do not see drug abuse, broken families, gang violence, and uneducated youth as matters of the utmost importance, then there is no reason for any of us to have a roster position on the team of Jesus Christ.
These issues must be seen as threats of the utmost severity and only the knowledge of God through Christ Jesus can bring the healing, restoration, and enlightenment that is so desperately needed in our communities.
Many of our communities are facing 4th and Goal situations. If we don't succeed, then we risk the danger of turning our fate over to the workers of iniquity. We must succeed. We must valiantly cross the threshold of suffering, addiction, and indifference. Our mandate is to raise an army that will fight with the utmost fervency to extend the Kingdom of God and the message of salvation to those who most desperately need to hear it.
4th and Goal is a ministry that is inherently missional and intentionally focused on discipleship. While we value the need to have fun and play, we see these natures as complimentary to the call to discipleship and not in contention with them. Through activities such as Open Gym, Sport Clinics, Apartment Outreach Clinics, and Youth Sports Leagues, it is our chief ambition to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our community.
Sports is a universal agent of unity. People from all spheres of influence, from all over the globe, rich and poor, black, brown, or white, all lace up their sneakers/cleats and meet at blacktops, soccer fields, or football fields all over the world in the name of achieving a common goal, victory.
