Basin Harbor's History
In 1882, Ardelia Beach, a Vergennes farmer's daughter, was far away from home teaching school in Iowa when the Basin Harbor farm came up for sale. She bought part of the property and returned home to operate her new farm. The beauty of the site prompted many \"city folk\" to ask about the possibility of staying at the farm as \"summer boarders\", a common practice in those days. By 1886, the hospitality aspects of the business far outweighed the farming parts, and the young resort began to grow, in part, no doubt, the result of Ardelia's excellent cooking skills.
IN 1909, Ardelia's nephew, Allen Penfield Beach joined the business and it was he who transformed the property into what it is today.
