Thank you to everyone who has expressed their concerns & well wishes as we worked throughout the night at the industrial fire/explosion. It’s comforting to see so much support from our community & we are grateful.

We are also grateful for all the help we received from our brothers/sister in our neighboring/regional fire and police departments. This was not only a significant fire, but also required a HAZMAT and structural collapse response. It is these types of events tha...t our mutual aid system was designed for & why it has been replicated throughout the country.

Finally, though we are grateful that our members are all safe, we recognize this is not the case for others. Our thoughts & support go out to all those & their families who were involved/impacted by this event & we hope our efforts will aid them throughout this difficult time. Please keep these people in your thoughts.

Happy Earth Day! Hope you’re finding a way to make the Earth a little better.

On Saturday we held our 11th annual park clean up for the Waukegan Park District. Our members spent the morning cleaning up Washington Park with a few member of the public. We managed to collect 40 bags of trash; 5 tires; a shopping cart; an adult “body massager”; and various other large items. We also found a mud covered American Flag, which we honored and have since disposed of in a more app...ropriate fashion. Most of the trash was in the ravine, which made our efforts all the more difficult. But its nice to see the park and ravine a little nicer than we found it.

Huge thank you to the members of the public who joined us including: Jenna Lee; Junior Miss Illinois Alyssa Gallarneau and her mother Patricia; the Lyons family; Chief George Bridges; and Alderman Sylvia Bolton. We really appreciate all their help and look forward to hopefully seeing more of you out next year.

Congratulations are in order! Over the last 2 days we have filled 3 vacancies on the Fire Department. Firefighter Paul Dawson is now Lieutenant Paul Dawson. Also, Daniel Derose Jr & Joel Fishman are now officially FF Derose & FF Fishman, or as we call them “boots”. Daniel & Joel, have a few years of fire and emergency medical training ahead of them before they’re completely ready to go, so wish them luck. Congratulations Paul, Daniel, & Joel!

Thank you to the City for ...filling these vacancies. With these hires we’re back up to 22 Lieutenants & 83 firefighters, which is basically the number of firefighters needed to staff us at 29 (as long as no one is injured, sick, or excused). So here’s to getting one step closer to fully staffing the Waukegan Fire Department & thank you to all who have been supportive of our efforts to fix our chronic understaffing. #ItsTimeFor29

Congratulations to the aldermen-elect and thanks to all the candidates who ran in support of firefighters and a fully staffed Waukegan Fire Department. It was refreshing to see so much support for fixing this issue. We look forward to seeing how our new City Council addresses the chronic understaffing of our fire stations.

Thank you also to all the outgoing aldermen for their service to our City. We appreciate their service and wish them the best of luck moving forward.

Finally, thank you to Waukegan voters for participating in our democracy. We appreciate all your support for fixing the staffing issues at the Fire Department. Make sure you continue to let your current and future alderman know that its time to fix this problem. #ItsTimeFor29
